General purpose rules of engagement and intro post

  • If you've found my journal, hello! Pull up a virtual chair, put your feet up, have a cup of tea (or drink of your choice). You are very very welcome!

  • I was Friends-only for a while. I'm not any more, but quite a lot of my posts before about mid-2007 are still Friends-only. Generally speaking, unless I'm making posts that are really only for me (lists of things to do) or for specific friends ('phone number or "this is what I look like for when we meet up" posts), my posts tend to be public.

  • That said, I compensate for being rather shy and introverted IRL by being very eager to make new friends on line. If I've Friended you, it's unlikely to be entirely random - either we share a few interests, or some mutual LJ friends, or we know each other IRL, or I've noticed you commenting in a community or on an LJ friends' post and I think you seem interesting or worth knowing. Obviously, you don't have to Friend me back, but I'd certainly appreciate it. Who wouldn't?

  • If you decide to Friend me, please say "hi" by adding a comment to this post.

  • I can be a bit tactless myself, but I tend to start out from a position of trying to be nice and polite to everyone. If I inadvertantly manage to offend or upset you, please bear that in mind. Likewise, if you accidentally offend or upset me, I'll be more than ready to forgive and forget ('cos life's too short, frankly). But if you're deliberately unpleasant or rude or jerk me around...well, I might take exception to that.

  • There are a few things about me that you may consider it worth knowing before you decide to Friend me:

  • I'm bisexual. That doesn't mean that I'm sexually promiscuous or anything like that - there are a few men that I think are rather attractive, but I'm entirely monogamous and engaged to a lady called Sarah - the wedding is planned for September 19th, 2009. If I get to know you well enough, you may well be invited. If you have a problem with me being bisexual, Friending me may not be a terribly good idea.

  • I write and read slash fiction, both fanfic and original - again, if you have a problem with that, you may want to think twice about Friending me. Generally speaking, any fic I write (which is pretty infrequent, I've got to admit) is hidden underneath an LJ cut, so you don't have to read it if you don't want to. I try to tag my entries, but more of them are untagged than are tagged. That said, if you actually want to read my fiction, there is a tag for it, and also I tend to add it to my Memories. Also, I have a goal of wanting to write a novel.

  • Generally, I'm pretty pro-gay rights and pro-gay marriage, and all told a bit of a liberal. Indeed, I'm fairly left-leaning politically.

  • I'm also a Christian, part of a church which is reformed (though I'm not) charismatic. At the moment, I'm...not exactly having a crisis of faith, but having an ongoing discussion with myself and (when I remember to include Him) God about what I'm looking for in life and where I need to be. Paths I'm looking at pursuing include Christian mysticism and/or some kind of Pagan/Christian hybrid.

  • Anything else you need to know about me, you can probably get from my LJ User Info.

  • I'm not sure where my default Userpic came from. When I find out, I'll post a link.

Greetings

Hi David!

Just wanted to say I've really appreciated your posts in christianforums.com. I have encountered a lot of hostility (and I would venture to say, stupidity) there ... and having a person like you around has been a breath of fresh air. I am an atheist, as is shown in my christianforums information, but you have made me feel that it is actually possible to talk to
religious people and have a meaningful conversation!

With all good wishes
Andrew (Andreusz)

Salutations. :)

Just like the person above me, I also appreciate your posts on CF. As a pagan, and as a queer person, I have really enjoyed your input on various subjects. Would you mind if I Friend you? I don't post on LJ as often as I'd like, but I try to update periodically.
Hope you're having a wonderful day.

Hi there! Yeah, I don't mind at all if you Friend me.

Nope, today's been crap, to be honest, but little things are cheering me up (like your cake or death icon!!! *g* )

I'm sorry about the crap day. Having a chronic pain disorder, I can TOTALLY relate. But, YAY for Eddie Izzard making it that much better. :)

Hi,

Hope you don't mind me commenting.

I came over randomly via one of the LOM comms and noticed you're a Christian. Nice to find another Christian on one of my comms (LoM, Dr Who etc). I'm an Anglican. Best wishes for the wedding.

A few questions for you....

Hi David,

I'd be interested to know how you can be a Christian and pro-gay/pro gay marriage, for the bible is quite clear in its teaching about same sex relationships?

Leviticus 18:22
"Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable."

True Christianity is not meant to fit into our own ideas or lifestyle and it is not pick and choose according to what this liberal world believes and what its people find acceptable. Through our love for God and relationship with him we should seek to obey his word and live accordingly. Otherwise we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Christianity by its very nature is Conservative, not liberal and so flies in the face of what the world finds acceptable. This I believe is the whole point. What is the point of dumbing down the truth so that it is acceptable to unbelievers to the point where what they come to follow is a deception of the truth and effectively a Cult and not true Christianity at all?

I would steer clear of "Christian mysticism and/or some kind of Pagan/Christian hybrid" as this is a deception/perversion of the truth and will only blind you from the truth and deceive you. Better to give up on Christianity completely and live your life according to the world's values than try to half follow something that in reality is not Christianity at all. Its like trying to combine Voodoo with Christianity!

Hi! I'm Pogue on CF, always enjoyed seeing your posts there, and it's nice to discover your blog too! Mind if I friend you?

[identity profile] davidbrider.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Course I don't mind! It's nice to be reminded that there are sane people on CF..! *g*

Hi, *waves*
I like the way you think.
I tend to be blunt, but mostly harmless.

I believe the standard response to people who quote the bit of Levticus they happen to agree with is to ask them if they're also pro-slavery, and anti-people wearing mixed fibres? Do you even keep kosher?

You might also be interested in researching the history of Voodoo, which started out as a synthesis of African beliefs and, yes, Roman Catholicism. (As Terry Pratchett puts it, Voodoo is a do-it-yourself religion, made out of whatever comes to hand.)

Having recognised you from [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho when you commented on [livejournal.com profile] zoefruitcake's entry yesterday, I've just come by to read your user info. We have *far* too much in common (*points at several other fandoms for example*) and we even live in the same town!

I'm originally from Cheltenham, but a set of various unpleasant circumstances took me to North Wales, followed by Manchester, Matlock, Birmingham, and finally here to Chelmsford. I'm engaged to [livejournal.com profile] rpdom and we've been together for almost two years.

If you ever fancy meeting up for a drink, we're not that far from the Chelmer Tavern :)

Hey, I came across your lj over writers block and you're obviously a doctor who fan and so am I :) So I thought i'd add you :) Hope that's okay?

[identity profile] davidbrider.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no problem! Welcome!

Hi there. :) I saw you in someone's journal (comm?), and was wondering if you wouldn't mind me friending you? I am also bisexual, liberal, but not very religious. But I have many friends online and RL that have very different backgrounds and believe in different things, and I'm as open as possible with others. It does not bother me at all what religion a person is, as long as they're nice and have many scruples (which you seem to have!). Also, I am a Doctor Who fan. ^___^

[identity profile] davidbrider.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no problam - Friend away. :o)

[identity profile] nekosensei.livejournal.com 2010-05-27 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey fellow Doctor Who fan! I'm here from [livejournal.com profile] geek_girls_anon. You looked interesting so I friended you.

[identity profile] davidbrider.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Friending you back!

[identity profile] diamonddustshoe.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I hit that "Try a random journal" button they've put in, and it sent me here, which is really something, since we do have one friend in common...

Tell me, is that Adric in one of your icons?? *squee*

[identity profile] davidbrider.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing in life is ever *truly* random, that's what I reckon!

And yes, that's Adric. I have no excuse, I was just watching Logopolis one evening and that shot rather stood out and the next thing I know I was making an icon of it and...

*ahem*

Feel free to take and use it!

ETA: And I notice you're in Pasadena - my wife and I were there last summer for a Transformers convention, had a very nice time there - I'd quite like to go back at some point.

Hello, you sound like someone I would get along with well. I saw that you're interested in Blake's 7, and, obviously, Dr. Who, and it looks like you enjoy puns.

[identity profile] allyj818.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
hey :)
I just clicked on your profile and the first thing I saw was Doctor Who so I love you :) (not in a creepy stalker-ish way, more like fan girl being weirdly happy about finding a fellow fan kind of way)
is it ok if I friend you? I've read a few of your posts and I like your style of writing :) (my friend said that sounded creep so, again, not being purposefully creepy :s)I don't really write anything particularly interesting on LJ, I just use it as my online diary :)
