The good and the...less good.
Sep. 15th, 2008 09:32 amHad a lovely weekend up in Sheffield at
blazingskies. I managed to very nearly miss my train up (and met with Sarah at St Pancras, giving her our copy of Good Omens to get signed by Terry Pratchett at the Piccadilly signing the next day), but fortunately I'd booked a fairly early train so when I got to Sheffield I had a bit of time to kill. Had a late lunch at KFC, then popped to Sheffield Space Centre and Patriot Games, in the latter of which I bought the new Traveller core rulebook. Which looks good, although I still prefer the original version.
Then met with Becky and went to her place, and in the evening there was a Kingdom Chaos session, which was delightfully bonkers, although as I'd been up late the night before and up early on Friday morning, I managed to drift off to sleep at one point.
Saturday was a fairly relaxed day. I went for a wander to Galaxy 4, which was fun, mainly because all I had was a series of directions from theaa.com rather than an actual map, and managed to get lost at one point.
In the meantime, in London, Sarah managed to get to 61st place in the queue for the PTerry signing, and she seemed to be having a good time. I missed her this weekend, but next weekend we're planning will just be the two of us, together, chilling out.
Back at Becky's, had a late lunch of pizza & curly fries which was nice, then a nap. Oh, also over the course of the day we watched some DVDs, mainly some Blake's 7 - most of the extras from series 1 and some from series 2, as well as Orac and City at the Edge of the World, the latter of which I'm pretty sure I've not seen since it was first on. It was great fun seeing Colin Baker chewing the scenery...
The in the evening was the video game party, which was great fun. Someone had brought Guitar Hero II, so I was able to do fairly well at that (particularly on Sweet Child O' Mine; also did okay-ish on a duet of Freebird, but not helped by the fact that the arrangement's different for the duet so a lot of what I've memorised for it didn't apply), before doing rather less well on various racing and fighting games, such as (off the top of my head), Micro Machines (which was fun but I was crap at), Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Worms World Party, Super Smash Bros., and possibly one or two others.
inflatablefish kept us fed with pancakes, and a happy, cheerful time was had by all. Despite the fact that the party was still going by 2:00am (and I didn't get to bed until 2:30am) my energy didn't flag particularly.
So yes, a very happy time - thanks for organising it, Becky.
On Sunday morning, I stirred at about 8:00am (bad move, but I'm not really terribly good at sleeping when it's daylight outside), and pottered around a bit clearing up some of the mess from the party, and also watched Becky's DVD of Galaxy Quest, which I'd not seen before but I'm glad I finally got round to it because it was great fun.
After a shower and packing, I headed off for home. Unfortunately, at Meadowhall, I had a bit of a problem - stepped off a kerb and missed my footing, stumbling and spraining/twisting my ankle. It was in a lot of pain - still is, as a result of which I'm taking a day or two off work. I'd already asked Sarah if, were I able to make it to Chorleywood, she might be able to give me a lift home. Unfortunately, she wasn't really up for that (and I can't really blame her), but fortunately, mum said she'd come to Victoria coach station and meet me and give me a lift home.
Which would have been fine were it not for the fact that London yesterday was subject to various road closures, meaning that a journey that should have taken mum (by my estimation) about 1 1/2 hours tops, took her three hours. I then navigated us back through London, along the Strand and Holborn Viaduct, joining up with the A11 and the A12. We got to Brentwood at about 9:00pm, at which point we stopped for a much-needed meal at the Toby Carvery before heading for home.
Whereupon I played a bit of Lego Star Wars before going to bed.
I'm also going to be spending most of today in bed resting my foot. I finished Double or Die in the coach back from Sheffield, and am now well over 100 pages into Hurricane Gold. I suspect I'll have that finished and be well into Devil May Care by the end of the day...
To put it bluntly, though, I feel a bit naff. To nick a phrase used in great quantities, ****biscuits. Where the **** can stand for any of several of the more popular four-letter sweary words.
