Oh, and if it makes you feel better about reading Twilight, I only picked it up because mocking the poor writing without actually having personally witnessed it is hypocritical. The gender politics ARE iffy, and he IS a stalker. Honestly, the whole thing reads like a bad self insert mary sue fanfiction for Sookie/Bill Compton from Southern Vampire Mysteries... only this time, the vampire can hear people's thoughts, and he also sparkles. And she falls "in love" a lot quicker.
But for all that, Stephanie Meyer definitely knows how to put together a story you'll keep reading. Even as you're horrified by the bad plot and characterization, you'll start the next chapter.
