My earliest datable memory is from the week of my first birthday. I was reading a book about unusual buildings in the west country, and I recognised a distinctive pub, but was confused as as far as I knew I'd not been to the west country until I was 23. I mentioned it to my mother, who said we had been there in August 1972. I never knew that, and there were no photographs of it
