Have just been reminded that it's 10 years to the day since Douglas Adams died. Feel like I should mark the occasion, but can't really think how to. I could raise a glass of water (in memory of the man who invented the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster...) in the vague hope that he's looking down on us (which as he was a staunch atheist would at least be ironic were it the case)...I could quote some bit of Adams' legendary witty prose, but most of the best ones have been done already, "This must be Thursday...I never could get the hang of Thursdays," is exactly one day out, and "the great omnicognate hyperlobic neutron wrangler could talk all four legs off an Arcturan megadonkey...but only I could persuade it to go for a walk again afterwards," worked fine in my wedding speech but doesn't really cut it as an in memoriam. I could list words that describe Douglas...tall, witty, genius, rubbish at deadlines...
But none of that seems really adequate. I think I'll just settle for saying that if you've not seen the Doctor Who serial City of Death you really ought to, as it's Douglas at his finest. Yes, I know it's credited to David Agnew. It's a long story. Just buy the DVD and watch it. You won't regret it... Dirk Maggs' adaptation of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is also a cracker.
At one point I probably ought to get round to reading Last Chance to See...
