Couple of bits of James Bond news - firstly, I'd managed to forget that the new Bond novel by Jeffery Deaver is imminent - as in, comes out tomorrow (in the UK at least; looks like the US has to wait a couple more weeks). Well, I get paid on Friday, so - sorted. Kind of bizarre coincidence - when Sebastian Faulks' dreadful Bond novel was released, I was in Milton Keynes for a couple of days of training; and now I'm working here permanently.

The other news - all the John Gardner Bond novels are getting spanking new reissues - info here. Probably won't be getting most of them, as the only one I never managed to get originally was Cold, but I've got to admit the new covers do look rather nice. And some of my copies are falling to bits...

I can't bear to read the new JB books - too fond of Fleming, for all he's a sexist, racist ass. Besides, Raymond Benson ruined one of my fandoms already even without me having any contact with his failprose.

I'm kind of fond of the Gardner ones, particularly the early ones - they were some of earliest experiences of Bond novels, I think I'd read his first three or four before reading all the Fleming ones.

Kind of curious - which fandom did Benson ruin for you? I only really know of him from his Bond novels...

Benson got commissioned to write the two Metal Gear Solid novels, and the results were unbearably terrible. I haven't read them, only seen some amazingly flat excerpts. What hurts is having read fan projects by really talented people, and then seeing this 'official' one turn out to be such a hackjob.
