Interesting question. As an actual person who travels round the world giving presents to all the good boys & girls, I probably stopped believing in that when I was about nine or so. But even after that I still found - and do still find - a lot of charm in the notion of Santa (or indeed Father Christmas) doing those things, and was happy to go along with the game of leaving out a mince pie for Father Christmas and some milk for his reindeer, even when I knew it was actually my parents sneaking into my room and leaving a pillowcase full of treats at the foot of my bed. I still find it appealing. When/if Sarah and I have children, I suspect we'll tell them the truth, about the folklore and legends behind the Father Christmas/Santa Claus stories, because there's actually some lovely depth to them, and introduce them to the Raymond Briggs books and Miracle on 34th Street (the original version) from an early age, 'cos Father Christmas fanfic is hard to beat. :-)
