...when exactly did the perfectly good noun "gift" start being used as a verb? And could it please stop? I don't know if it's an Americanism that's started being used over here or what, but it doesn't seem to be used in any sense in which "give" wouldn't serve equally well...

Because it's a verb which has been in use since the 1500s (http://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2009/02/on-gifting-and-regifting.html). It's not an Americanism at all.
