One hundred books meme, or something.

1. The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien - read it, find it a bit heavygoing. Quite like the Radio 4 adaptation and the Jackson film version.
2. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen - not read it, but I've recently borrowed the DVD of the BBC adaptation (the "Colin Firth in wet shirt" version) from my mum.
3. His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman - saw the film version when it came out. Enjoyed it (hey, it's got massive polar bears and Daniel Craig in it, what's not to like?), but haven't bothered with the books yet.
4. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams - one of my favourite series of all times. Read the books, seen the TV series, listened to the various radio series, love them all to bits. Tend to avoid the film version, though. Yuk.
5. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling - yeah, read them, seen most of the films, enjoy them. Not really majorly into the fandom these days, but Remus/Sirius is still my OTP.
6. To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee - I think I had to read this at secondary school, but my recollection is of not getting far with it.
7. Winnie the Pooh, AA Milne - a favourite of mine. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to cry at the ending of The House at Pooh Corner. The sequel Return to Hundred Acre Wood was also enjoyably in keeping with the spirit and feel of the originals (which is more than can be said for Eoin Colfer's Hitch-hiker's follow-on, And Another Thing...)
8. Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell - I know I've started it, I'm not sure I've ever finished it. My copy is falling to bits, so if I'm going to read it a replacement copy in one piece would be a minimum requirement.
9. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, CS Lewis - read it and the other books, and seen the BBC adaptations (I've only seen the first two of the more recent film adaptations). It's okay, but if I'm honest I don't really rate Lewis's writing style.
10. Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë - I'm pretty sure I've read this.
11. Catch-22, Joseph Heller - again, one I think I may have had to read for school but not got far with.
12. Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë - again, pretty sure I've read this.
13. Birdsong, Sebastian Faulks - after his Bond novel of a couple of years back, I'm not desparate to read any of his novels, frankly.
14. Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier - never read it.
15. The Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger - again, never read it.
16. The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame - read it, enjoyed it, but not in the same league as Winnie the Pooh.
17. Great Expectations, Charles Dickens - again, one I started for school and didn't finish. However, on a recent trip to Rochester I treated myself to some Dickens, including this one. Hopefully I'll get round to reading them some day.
18. Little Women, Louisa May Alcott - never read it.
19. Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Louis de Bernieres - never read it.
20. War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy - never read it, but I keep meaning to.
21. Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell - I haven't even seen the film.

29. The Grapes Of Wrath, John Steinbeck - never read it.
30. Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, Lewis Carroll - read it and the sequel. Enjoyed them both. Delightfully bonkers.
31. The Story Of Tracy Beaker, Jacqueline Wilson - no; in my entire life I've only read one Jacqueline Wilson book, but not this one.
32. One Hundred Years Of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez - never read it.
33. The Pillars Of The Earth, Ken Follett - wasn't this a TV adaptation a while back? But no, neither read nor seen.
34. David Copperfield, Charles Dickens - see above comments on Dickens, although I don't think this is one of the ones I bought.
35. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl - yeah, love it, miles better than either of the film versions. The sequel is pretty good too.
36. Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson - don't think I've ever read it.
37. A Town Like Alice, Nevil Shute - no.
38. Persuasion, Jane Austen - no.
39. Dune, Frank Herbert - read it, struggled through to the end, felt kind of *meh* at the end. One day I might see the film.

41. Anne Of Green Gables, LM Montgomery - no.
42. Watership Down, Richard Adams - one of those that I know I've started but I don't think I've ever finished. Will do some day.
43. The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald - I don't think so, but someone once bought me a Fitzgerald novel as a present and it might have been this one.
44. The Count Of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas - never read it.
45. Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh - bought it a few years ago when the film adaptation was on release, but haven't read it yet.
46. Animal Farm, George Orwell - read it, enjoyed it at the time, but probably ought to read it again so I could re-appreciate it as an adult.
47. A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens - one of the Dickens one I picked up in Rochester. Will read. One day. Still, you can't beat the Muppets film version...or Patrick Stewart's one-man stage version, for that matter.

49. Goodnight Mister Tom, Michelle Magorian - no.
50. The Shell Seekers, Rosamunde Pilcher - no.
51. The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett - no, although I loved A Little Princess, so I may well like this.

53. The Stand, Stephen King - no. Horror's not really my thang, so I'll pass, ta.

55. A Suitable Boy, Vikram Seth - no.
56. The BFG, Roald Dahl - no. Used to love Dahl's books in the '70s, but this was a bit after my time, so to speak.
57. Swallows And Amazons, Arthur Ransome - yes, good fun read. Quite liked the film adaptation too. I've also read at least one of the sequels.
58. Black Beauty, Anna Sewell - never read it.
59. Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer - I bought it when Colfer was announced as writing the Hitch-Hiker's follow-on, but still haven't read it.
60. Crime And Punishment, Fyodor Dostoyevsky - never read it.
61. Noughts And Crosses, Malorie Blackman - never read it.
62. Memoirs Of A Geisha, Arthur Golden - never read it.
63. A Tale Of Two Cities, Charles Dickens - see earlier Dickens comments. Can't remember if this is one I bought or not...
64. The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCollough - never read it. Might do one day, or at least try to get a copy of the TV adaptation.
65. Mort, Terry Pratchett - I'm a big fan of Pratchett, although this was one of his earlier books so possibly not his best..?

68. Good Omens, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman - absolutely brilliant book, one of the best I've ever read. Looking forward to the TV adaptation. Hope it does it justice.
